Dlaczego "He has played" zamiast "He played"?

Mam problem z poniższym zdaniem.

He has played three football matches this year.

Dlaczego użyto present perfect zamiast past simple?

This year to jest okres który dalej trwa. W tym roku jeszcze może grać w piłkę (okres jest tak jakby otwarty bym powiedział :D)
jeśli zamiast "this year" było by "last year" wtedy użyjemy past simple. Ale w przypadku "this week", "this month" itd. używamy present perfect.
